Before you apply

If you plan to run a food business in Queensland, you must ensure the premises you want to use is suitable.

Start by contacting your local council to check if:

your type of business is allowed at the site

you need any council licences for your activities.

You may need both:

a food business licence issued by your local council

an accreditation with Safe Food.

For example, a dairy processor with a café on site will need a Food Business Licence issued by your local council for the café as well as an Accreditation with Safe Food Production Queensland.

You must provide written confirmation from your local council that your proposed activities are allowed at your chosen site. This can take days or weeks, so contact council early to avoid delays. Do this before you apply to Safe Food Production Queensland.

Before applying, you should also review the food safety scheme and specific requirements for your activity(https://www.safefood.qld.gov.au/food-business/want-sell-supply/).

Supporting documentation

Your application must also include supporting documentation relevant to your activity, such as:

food safety plan or management statement

site plan

floor plan

photos

other documents, licences or approvals (for example, development approvals, biosecurity approvals, supplier agreements etc.).
