Make a food safety complaint

If you are concerned about the food safety practices of a food business accredited by Safe Food Production Queensland or about a food business operating without accreditation, you can report it to us.

We investigate complaints about the production and processing of primary produce in Queensland to help protect public health and maintain confidence in Queensland’s food supply.

What can I report?

You can make a complaint if you believe an accredited food business is not handling food safely or if you believe a food business is operating without an accreditation.

This may include concerns about:

unsafe food handling or processing practices

poor hygiene or sanitation

contamination of food

failure to keep food at safe temperatures

pests or animals in food production areas

unsafe equipment or facilities

food being produced or processed in a way that could make people sick

a business operating without the required Safe Food accreditation.

You do not need to know whether a law has been broken before making a complaint. If you have genuine concerns, let us know.

What businesses does Safe Food regulate?

Safe Food Production Queensland regulates the production and processing of primary produce, including:

dairy

eggs

horticulture (only seed sprouts)

meat (including poultry)

seafood.

These businesses are accredited under the Food Production (Safety) Act 2000(https://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/view/html/inforce/current/act-2000-045).

When should I contact someone else?

Safe Food does not regulate every food business in Queensland.

If your complaint relates to:

a restaurant, café, takeaway, bakery, supermarket or other retail food outlet in Queensland, contact your local council(https://www.dlgwv.qld.gov.au/local-government/for-the-community/local-government-directory/search-the-local-government-directory)
