Patanjali Foods says the Maharashtra FDA's order was issued to its super distributor, adding that no authenticated laboratory report confirming quality violations has been received

Patanjali Foods has said that the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) action against certain batches of its Cow Ghee was directed at a distributor and not the company. The FMCG manufacturer added that it had not received any direct order from the regulator or an authenticated laboratory report establishing a violation of food safety standards.

In a stock exchange filing on Tuesday, the company said the order concerning the identified stock was issued to the concerned super distributor, which operates as a food business operator (FBO), and was not addressed directly to Patanjali Foods.

"The communication/order in relation to the identified stock of Patanjali Cow Ghee was issued to and received by the concerned super distributor/FBO. The said communication has not been addressed or issued directly to the Company. The Company has been informed of the matter by the concerned FBO and has obtained a copy of the communication for its examination."

The company said FDA officials had collected samples from the batches in question for laboratory testing. However, neither Patanjali Foods nor the distributor had received an authenticated test report confirming that the samples failed to meet the prescribed quality standards.

"It is important to clarify that the collection of samples for testing, by itself, does not establish adulteration, substandard quality or any violation of applicable food safety standards," Patanjali Foods said.
