Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi invites investors to explore opportunities in renewable energy, storage and green hydrogen as the state seeks to become one of India's top five power-exporting states

Odisha plans to expand its power transmission infrastructure with a sanctioned outlay of Rs 19,348 crore as it seeks to raise installed renewable energy capacity to 10.96 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. The state is also seeking to attract private investment across renewable energy generation, storage and emerging clean-energy technologies as it works towards becoming one of India's leading power-exporting states.

Presenting the state's long-term vision at Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi invited investors to participate in Odisha's clean-energy expansion. Declaring that "Odisha is open for business and ready for clean energy investment", Majhi said the state aims to become one of India's top five power-exporting states.

The infrastructure expansion forms a central part of this strategy. Under the Mukhya Mantri Shakti Vikas Yojana, Odisha has sanctioned Rs 19,348 crore for new 765-kilovolt (kV), 400-kV and 220-kV substations. The scheme also covers the modernisation and automation of existing infrastructure, artificial intelligence integration and cybersecurity measures.

Addressing the issue, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said the state was prioritising transmission readiness to prevent evacuation constraints from delaying new projects.

"We are building the grid ahead of generation. Too often, clean energy projects across the world are ready to generate but cannot evacuate their power. We in Odisha are determined to avoid that," Singh Deo said. He added, "When your project is ready, the grid should already be waiting for it."

Storage And Green Hydrogen Odisha estimates its pumped storage potential at around 49 GW, alongside more than 12 GW of floating solar potential across reservoirs and water bodies and over 12 GW of wind potential along its coastline.

Singh Deo said the government was undertaking scientific resource assessments to provide investors with reliable project data. "Investors get bankable data, not assumptions," he said.

The state has installed three wind resource assessment masts, with three more under development and tenders floated for another six. It is also assessing geothermal resources and exploring nuclear energy and surface hydrokinetic technology.

Green hydrogen and ammonia form another pillar of Odisha's industrial strategy. The state is developing hubs around Gopalpur and Paradeep, with a combined target of 4.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen and ammonia by 2030 to support green steel and aluminium production.
