Jamaica’s National Water Commission (NWC) is seeking a 51 per cent increase in water and sewerage rates, prompting calls for consumers to participate in the public consultation process before a decision is made.
The application was submitted to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), which confirmed receipt and began assessing whether the submission met the requirements for review.
The NWC maintains that the proposed increase is necessary to meet operating expenses and finance priority investments. However, the request has raised concerns among households and businesses already dealing with the cost of living.
The proposed increase could affect families’ monthly budgets, as well as businesses that depend on reliable water services, including hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments.
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica has also expressed concern, arguing that any approved increase should come with clear conditions and accountability. Its executive director, Sacha Vaccianna Riley, indicated that a phased adjustment would be preferable if a rise in rates is granted.
The regulator may request additional information from the NWC before deciding whether to formally accept the application for review. If the application proceeds, consumers will have an opportunity to express their views during public consultation.
The proposal has therefore not yet been confirmed as an approved rate increase. The regulatory process will determine the next steps.
