United Oil and Gas has reported progress in preparations for potential offshore oil exploration in Jamaican waters following the completion of a study examining drilling equipment, rig availability and logistical requirements.
The study focused on the company’s Walton-Morant licence area and identified more than ten potential drilling rigs, along with equipment requirements and a proposed logistics plan making use of Jamaica’s existing port facilities and commercial services.
The findings are intended to help the company in discussions with potential partners that could provide financing and support for a future exploration campaign.
If commercially recoverable oil is eventually discovered, the project could have implications for Jamaica’s energy sector, including the possibility of reducing dependence on imported crude oil. Petrojam has indicated that a commercial discovery could prompt a reassessment of its existing sourcing arrangements.
However, the presence of commercially recoverable oil has not been established. The study is a preparatory step and does not constitute a commitment to begin drilling.
Any future exploration programme would depend on securing commercial agreements, financing and the necessary regulatory approvals. Drilling has been projected for late 2027 or early 2028, subject to those requirements being met.
The development has attracted attention because of its potential long-term economic significance. Nevertheless, the project remains at the exploration-planning stage, and its eventual commercial viability is still uncertain.
