The SANAP community and ALSA warmly welcomes home the Gough 71 overwintering team following their year on remote Gough Island. As part of the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP), the team has demonstrated dedication, resilience and teamwork while contributing to scientific research, environmental monitoring and the continued operation of South Africa’s sub-Antarctic research station. Spending a year on one of the world’s most isolated islands requires commitment, adaptability and a strong sense of community. We congratulate every member of Gough 71 on their achievements and thank them for their valuable contributions.

Each overwintering team adds a unique chapter to South Africa’s rich polar history, creating memories, friendships and experiences that form part of our shared national heritage. As Gough 71 returns home and Gough 72 continues the important work on the island, the legacy of exploration, science and camaraderie lives on. ALSA is proud to preserve and share these stories for future generations, ensuring that the people behind South Africa’s polar programme are never forgotten. Welcome home, Gough 71, and thank you for being part of South Africa’s enduring polar legacy!
