If Bahrain has a front door, it is Bab Al Bahrain — the “Gateway of Bahrain.” Standing in Customs Square at the edge of the capital’s business district, this handsome archway marks the entrance to the legendary Manama Souq and has been the symbolic heart of the city for generations.

The gateway to old Manama

Bab Al Bahrain was built in 1949 , during the era of British adviser Sir Charles Belgrave, and originally stood right on the waterfront — before land reclamation pushed the shoreline far to the north. The building was later redesigned to give it a more distinctly Islamic and Bahraini character , and today it houses information offices and small exhibits while remaining a working landmark.

Walk through the arch and you step straight into the Manama Souq : a maze of lanes packed with gold merchants, spice and perfume stalls, textiles, electronics, tailors and traditional coffee shops. It is the best place in Bahrain to feel the pulse of the old trading city.

What to see and do

The gateway and Customs Square — a favourite photo spot, especially when lit in the evening.

The Gold Souq — dazzling window displays and some of the most competitive gold prices in the region.

Spice and perfume lanes — frankincense, saffron, oud and traditional Arabian scents.

Local cafés — stop for karak tea and fresh Bahraini sweets.

Visiting in 2026

Location: Customs Square, central Manama — walkable from the diplomatic and financial districts.

Best time: late afternoon into the evening, when the souq is liveliest and the heat has eased.

Getting there: plentiful parking nearby, or an easy taxi ride from anywhere in the city.

Living in and around Manama

Central Manama offers the widest range of property in Bahrain — from budget-friendly apartments near the souq to premium towers in the adjacent financial and diplomatic areas. It suits professionals who want to live in the middle of everything, with restaurants, offices and culture on the doorstep.
