Community. Safety. Culture: Celebrating the 2026 POGOH Community Ambassador Prog

What happens when you bring people together, create space to learn, and make cycling feel like it belongs to everyone? You build community.

That was the spirit behind POGOH’s 2026 Community Ambassador Program, guided by three words that shaped the season from beginning to end:

Community. Safety. Culture.

This year, our Community Ambassadors consisted of great individuals from the Homewood’s Children Village (Rashaa and Gayle), Homewood-Brushton YMCA (Talia) and the University of Pittsburgh Community Engagement Center in Homewood (Rickeya and Vernard ). We also had the expertise of Coach Neil Walker as our Education and Safety Specialist.

These Ambassadors helped demonstrate that biking is about more than getting from Point A to Point B. It can be a way to build relationships, create healthier communities, increase confidence, and celebrate the people and places that make Pittsburgh unique

COMMUNITY: Riding Together

At the center of the 2026 program was community.

POGOH’s Community Ambassador Program was created to connect residents in marginalized and mobility-deficient communities with bikeshare while breaking down barriers to bicycling. In 2026, the program focused all its efforts in Homewood, with ambassadors serving as important connections between POGOH and Homewood residents and community stakeholders.

The Homewood Community Slow Roll series became one of the strongest expressions of that mission.

From April through August, every Slow Roll sold out , with all 30 reserved POGOH bikes claimed for each ride . More than 100 community members came out throughout the season to ride, connect, and experience their community together.

Five rides became more than five events.

They became opportunities to meet a neighbor, bring a friend, discover a new route, try bikeshare, and experience the simple joy of riding together.

The Slow Rolls were intentionally designed to welcome riders of all skill levels and emphasize connection, community engagement, and cycling as an accessible and enjoyable activity.

SAFETY: Building Confidence on Two Wheels

A strong cycling community must also be a safe cycling community.

That’s why safety education was an important part of this year’s program. The Community Ambassadors supported Biking 101 and Biking 201 Learn to Ride initiatives sponsored by Duquesne Light at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA, helping residents develop the skills and confidence needed to ride safely.

Biking 101 provided an introduction for novice cyclists with little to no experience, while Biking 201 supported intermediate riders looking to strengthen their cycling skills and learn best practices for solo and group riding.

Together, the initiatives served more than 30 community members .

But safety is about more than knowing how to ride a bike.

It’s about feeling comfortable enough to get on one.

It’s about understanding how to navigate the streets, knowing where to find resources, and having the confidence to participate in the cycling community.

Our ambassadors helped make that possible.

CULTURE: Creating a Cycling Community That Reflects Homewood

Culture was woven throughout the program.

The Community Ambassador model recognizes that building a stronger cycling community requires more than simply bringing bikes into a neighborhood. It requires relationships, trust, local knowledge, and a willingness to listen.

Our ambassadors brought those qualities to every ride and every activation.

They recruited their neighbors. They welcomed new riders. They helped organize and support events. They shared information about cycling safety and infrastructure. And they helped POGOH better understand how to show up for the community.

The result was a cycling experience shaped not only by POGOH, but by the people who call Homewood home. That matters. Because community cycling should look and feel like the community itself.

The Numbers Tell Part of the Story

The impact of this year’s program can be seen in the numbers:

5 Homewood Community Slow Rolls

30 POGOH bikes reserved for every Slow Roll

100+ Community members joined the Slow Roll series

30+ Community members learned to ride during the Biking 101 and Biking 201 classes

But numbers only tell part of the story.

The real impact was in the conversations, the new riders, the returning riders, the neighbors meeting one another, and the confidence built one ride at a time.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 Community Ambassadors helped demonstrate what is possible when we invest in people, listen to communities, and create opportunities for neighbors to move together.

To our Community Ambassadors, riders, Learn to Ride participants, community partners, and everyone who showed up throughout the season: thank you for riding with us.

As we close out the 2026 Community Ambassador season, we are grateful to every ambassador, rider, community partner, and Homewood resident who helped make this year successful.

You showed us what can happen when Community, Safety, and Culture come together.

The rides may have ended, but the relationships, confidence, and connections built along the way continue to move forward. Here’s to continuing to build a Pittsburgh where everyone has the opportunity to ride, connect, and belong.
