Of Graduations and Honour Ceremonies: Reaping the Dividends
b y Petra Williams
October 11, 2026 – Graduation and awards ceremonies are particularly heartwarming. The smiles, the applause, the proud faces, the occasional tears, and that unmistakable sense of accomplishment as years of sacrifice, commitment and investment finally begin to pay dividends.
This week, Antigua and Barbuda has much to celebrate.
Celebrating the Graduates
To the latest batch of graduates from The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, congratulations! Your achievement represents far more than the successful completion of an academic program. It rewards countless hours of study, missed social engagements, late nights, early mornings, financial commitments, and, undoubtedly, moments when the temptation to throw in the towel must have been very real.
But you persevered. And now you get to celebrate!
Of course, very few make this journey entirely on their own. Behind many of those certificates and degrees stands an entire support cast: parents and guardians who provided financial and emotional support; husbands, wives, girlfriends and boyfriends who adjusted their schedules, absorbed additional responsibilities, offered encouragement and understood when time together had to be sacrificed; children who shared their parents with textbooks and assignments; and friends, colleagues and employers who helped make the journey possible.
To all of you, congratulations too! Your investment has also yielded dividends.
A National Investment in Education
Beyond the graduates and those who supported them lies a larger national story: the return on Antigua and Barbuda’s investment in education.
The establishment of The UWI Five Islands Campus represents one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most significant investments in the development of its human capital. For a small island developing state, where our greatest resource must surely be the knowledge, skills, creativity and productive capacity of our people, expanding access to tertiary education is no small undertaking.
It is a national investment whose returns extend well beyond the individual graduate.
Every additional qualified teacher, nurse, manager, entrepreneur, researcher, administrator or other professional adds to the country’s capacity to develop, compete, innovate and respond to the challenges of an increasingly complex world.
There are, of course, costs associated with building and sustaining such an institution. And, as with any major public investment, there must be continued attention to quality, relevance, accessibility and measurable outcomes.
No one can deny the immense satisfaction for the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in witnessing the human dividends of that investment walking proudly across the graduation stage.
A university campus is not simply another collection of buildings. It has the potential to be a singular national change-maker, transforming individual circumstances, expanding opportunities for families and strengthening the country’s human capital, one graduating class at a time.
Recognising Our Young Scholars
The same pattern of investment and achievement was evident at another stage of the education journey, as the 2026 CIBC Caribbean Grade Six National Assessment Awards provided an opportunity to applaud our younger scholars.
These young achievers have successfully distinguished themselves at the primary-school level, an important stage in their national education journey. Their accomplishments deserve every bit of the recognition and encouragement they received.
Behind their successes, too, are investments that cannot always be measured in dollars and cents.
