Windhoek Advances Market Projects to Create Trading Space for Nearly 450 Informal Traders. The City of Windhoek is progressing with several market infrastructure projects aimed at improving trading conditions and expanding facilities for informal traders across the Namibian capital.
The developments were outlined by City of Windhoek Chief Executive Officer Moses Matyayi during a briefing to two National Assembly Standing Committees focusing on economic development, public administration, urban and rural development, and land reform.
Among the projects is the Central Hospital Market and Taxi Rank, where construction is expected to begin following the handover of the site this month. Valued at N$8.8 million, the development will provide trading facilities for 50 informal traders.
At Erf 7203, opposite Shoprite, the site has also been handed over to a contractor for the construction of a N$4.7 million market. The project has received N$3.2 million in funding from Debmarine Namibia and is expected to accommodate 46 traders, with completion scheduled for December 2026.
Meanwhile, designs for the Truckport/Woodcarvers Market have been completed, while plans for its access roads are still underway. The project is estimated to cost N$15 million.
In Havana 4-Way, the City is continuing efforts to relocate the remaining informal traders to allow for the completion of Aneas Peter Nanyemba Road.
