What happens when renewable energy is no longer just about having power, but about what that power enables?

Across Kenya, Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) is creating opportunities for enterprise growth, agricultural transformation, job creation and improved livelihoods. By powering productive activities such as irrigation, agro-processing, refrigeration and small businesses, renewable energy can contribute to economic development while expanding access to reliable energy solutions.

However, unlocking this potential requires more than technology. It calls for supportive policies, accessible financing, appropriate quality standards, technical expertise and stronger coordination across the renewable energy ecosystem.

Bringing Stakeholders Together

At the National Policy Dialogue and Showcase on Productive Use of Renewable Energy, the Kenya Renewable Energy Association (KEREA) brought together stakeholders from government, county administrations, regulators, development partners, the private sector and other actors across the renewable energy sector.

The dialogue centred on a critical question: What will it take to move PURE from promising solutions to a thriving, sustainable market?

The engagement provided an opportunity to examine the opportunities for scaling PURE technologies, discuss barriers affecting adoption and identify practical approaches to strengthening the market. It also created space for stakeholders to exchange experiences, showcase solutions and consider how policy and industry collaboration can accelerate the uptake of productive renewable energy technologies.

Building on Evidence and Policy Recommendations

The dialogue built on evidence and recommendations emerging from the PURE White Paper, providing a foundation for discussions on the policy, regulatory and market conditions needed to support sector growth.

Stakeholders reflected on several challenges affecting the wider adoption of PURE solutions, including limited access to appropriate financing, fragmented regulatory frameworks, gaps in quality assurance, insufficient technical capacity, inadequate after-sales services and coordination challenges between national and county governments.

Addressing these barriers will be essential to creating an enabling environment in which businesses, farmers and communities can confidently invest in productive renewable energy technologies.
