Language, Culture, and Education: HSE University Hosts Second Indonesian Language Congress
On October 28, 2026, HSE University in Moscow hosted the Second Indonesian Language Congress, entitled ‘The Indonesian Language on the Global Stage: Challenges, Opportunities, and Prospects’. The event brought together representatives of the diplomatic community, educational and research organisations from Russia and Indonesia, as well as teachers, researchers, and students. The key topics discussed included the development of Indonesian language teaching, academic exchanges, and new opportunities for humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.
Symbolically, the congress was held on Youth Pledge Day, an important date in Indonesia's history associated with national unity and the emergence of Indonesian as the country's common language. Khoirul Rosyadi, Education and Culture Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Moscow, recalled the historical and contemporary significance of this occasion. He emphasised that learning a language goes far beyond mastering vocabulary and grammar: above all, it provides an opportunity to understand one another better, discover new cultures, and foster meaningful dialogue between people.
Svyatoslav Kvartalnov, Head of the HSE Representative Offices Department, conveyed a welcome address from HSE University President Nikita Anisimov（https://www.hse.ru/en/staff/anisimov/） to the congress participants. In his message, the HSE president highlighted the special role of language education in strengthening humanitarian ties, promoting academic mobility, and creating new opportunities for joint research and educational initiatives. HSE University is keen to further expand its cooperation with Indonesian universities, research centres, and cultural organisations.

Jose Tavares, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Russia, also delivered a welcoming address. He thanked HSE University for hosting the congress, emphasised the importance of Russia's established tradition of Indonesian language studies, and highly praised the contribution of teachers, researchers, and students to fostering mutual understanding between the two countries. According to the ambassador, more than 800 Indonesian students are currently studying in 41 Russian cities. Among the promising areas of cooperation, he singled out the development of a professional community of Indonesian language teachers, the creation of modern teaching materials, and the expansion of opportunities for language practice.

Prof. Atip Latipulhayat, Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of Indonesia, spoke about his country's efforts to strengthen the international standing of the Indonesian language and develop educational exchanges with Russia. In particular, he announced that 50 students from Indonesian vocational colleges were scheduled to visit Russia in November.
During the congress, participants discussed ways to support the teaching community, develop modern approaches to language learning, create educational resources, and introduce new formats of academic and cultural cooperation. The event also paid particular attention to initiatives that could expand direct contacts between educational institutions and young people in Russia and Indonesia.
For HSE University, developing cooperation with Indonesia is of long-term strategic importance. The university's representative office in Indonesia is becoming an important link between HSE University and its partners in the region, helping to develop academic contacts, promote educational programmes, and implement joint initiatives. The university sees the office not only as a means of maintaining a permanent presence in the country, but also as a regional educational hub that opens up additional opportunities for cooperation with ASEAN member states.
