Prize Winning Writers Featured at 2026 BVI Lit Fest

By Claudia Colli

Since its inception in 2021, the BVI Lit Fest has headlined international authors, with an emphasis on Caribbean writers. Held from 5-8 November, the 2026 festival will feature writers from Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad among others. Additional guests include publishers and literary agents, who can foster the careers of budding local writers, through talks and workshops.

Dr. Richard Georges, president of the H. Lavity Stoutt Comunity College is the force behind the Festival. Dr. Georges is a founding editor of the online Moko Literary magazine. The magazine focuses on promoting fiction, poetry, visual arts, and criticism that reflect a Caribbean heritage or experience. He is also the Territory’s first Poet Laureate.

In 2018 Dr. Georges won a grant to bring the prominent British poet, writer and educator, Raymond Antrobus, and other selected poets, to the BVI to conduct a master class on poetry. The Master Class included a book fair and other events. This, explained Dr. Georges, formed the roots of today’s Literary Festival, and its mission to promote Caribbean literature and writers. The event also fosters local writers and poets through an Emerging Fellowship program. Current BVI Emerging Writer Fellows are Rea Vanterpool, Johanna Gibson and Dominique de Castro
