Information on the progress of work at the SPMO General Meeting.

Mar 23, 2026

On March 23, 2026, Jerzy Czechowski, leading the project on the Polish side, presented extensive information on the progress of the project “ViscoTherm: Improving the thermal shock resistance of refractory materials through controlled liquid phase formation” at the General Meeting of the Association of Refractory Material Producers (SPMO). The research is being carried out by teams at ICIMB, HS Koblenz, and FGF in close cooperation. The head of the Institute’s team submits quarterly reports on research progress to SPMO. So far, the Ł-ICiMB team has conducted thermochemical analyses predicting phase equilibrium compositions and the course of chemical reactions in corundum castable doped with impurities during the firing process. This determined what amounts of liquid phase and what viscosity will occur under equilibrium conditions. Concretes were selected in variants using a binding based on active alumina: VA – VAM, and using alumina cement. The HS Koblenz team has prepared samples with agreed compositions for further research. In addition, the public tender for the construction of a multifunctional high-temperature microscope has been decided, which will be built as part of the started Task 3 and will be used in this task by Ł-ICIMB team.

Advances are settled with NCBIR and ICIMB according to the task implementation and the schedule approved by NCBIR. The next meeting of the research implementers with the user committee from the industry will take place in Gliwice on May 27, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM. The invitation prepared by the coordinator of the entire project, Erwan Brochen from FGF, along with the meeting program, has been sent to the members of User Commitee.
