The Refining and Petrochemical Activity is responsible of the transformation of hydrocarbons in order to satisfy the needs of the domestic market with quality oil products.

With a view to valorize its raw materials, SONATRACH through its investment program in refining and petrochemicals, ambitions to be a major player in Algeria’s industrialization.
Today, SONATRACH owns six operating refineries across the country, of which, one dedicated to condensate and another one abroad.
It also owns in full ownership, two operating petrochemical complexes.
SONATRACH’s development plan aims at modernizing and strengthening the existing refining capacities and establishing a performing petrochemical industry through the valorization and transformation of raw materials available throughout the segments of the hydrocarbon chain.
This effort is to be focused on the most value-creating investment projects, and for this purpose, the following realizations are planned:
Modernization and development of the refining tool. Thanks to the rehabilitation investments achieved in the refineries, SONATRACH has recorded excellent production performance , allowing a full coverage of the local market needs with fuel without resorting to imports.
52% of the products provided by SONATRACH refineries, are supplied to the national market and include: Gasoline; gasoil; kerojet, fuel, bitumen, white spirit, lubricants and aromatics well as special products; The remaining production of the refineries is destined to export and concerns : Naphtha, fuel-oil, base oil and aromatics.
In the medium term, new projects are planned to meet the growing national demand for fuel:
HASSI MESSAOUD NEW REFINERY PROJECT , with a processing capacity of 5 million tons of crude oil per year.
FUEL OIL CONVERSION UNIT PROJECT in Skikda, with a processing capacity of 2.3 million tons of fuel oil per year.
NHT/CCR PLATFORMING UNIT PROJECT at the Arzew refinery, with a processing capacity of 780,000 tons of naphtha per year.
