Nigeria’s cinema industry has recorded unprecedented growth in 2026, generating ₦15.49 billion in revenue within the first 10 months of the year. The figure has already surpassed the ₦15.4 billion recorded throughout 2025, putting the industry on course to cross the ₦20 billion mark before December ends.

The growth reflects the increasing commercial strength of Nollywood, with major productions attracting audiences beyond the traditional December festive period. Female filmmakers and actresses have also played significant roles in the industry’s success, combining acting, production and aggressive promotional strategies to deliver some of the biggest cinema hits.

Funke Akindele Leads The Box Office Race

Funke Akindele remains one of the biggest forces in Nigeria’s cinema industry, with three of her productions occupying positions among the top four highest-grossing Nigerian films of all time.

Her 2025 movie, Behind The Scenes, currently leads the chart with an impressive ₦2.76 billion in box office revenue. The achievement followed the success of Everybody Loves Jenifa, which generated ₦1.88 billion in 2024, and A Tribe Called Judah, which earned ₦1.4 billion in 2023.

Akindele is, however, preparing to raise the bar with her upcoming holiday release, The Four: No One Fights Alone. The filmmaker has reportedly set a ₦5 billion box office target for the project.

Speaking at the Creative Africa Nexus Weekend in Lagos, she defended her approach to promoting films, stressing the importance of marketing in achieving commercial success.

“Marketing, for me, is everything,” she said.

The film’s international premiere at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London, scheduled for November 29, has reportedly sold out. Akindele also disclosed to CNN that Everybody Loves Jenifa remains her most expensive production, highlighting the investment involved in transporting a 175-member cast and crew to Ghana to create custom sets.

Other Women Making Their Mark

Beyond Akindele, several actresses and producers have continued to strengthen their positions in the Nigerian cinema market.

Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi has maintained her presence among the industry’s leading commercial filmmakers. Her production, Oversabi Aunty, grossed ₦1.18 billion, placing it fourth on the all-time chart. Her earlier release, Alakada: Bad and Boujee, also crossed the ₦500 million mark.

Blessing Uzzi has equally recorded a major success with Call of My Life. Released in May 2026 under Bluhouse Studios, the romantic comedy reportedly generated ₦902.3 million, making it the highest-grossing domestic release of the first half of the year.

The performance has also challenged the long-standing perception that Nigerian films depend heavily on December releases to achieve major box office returns.

Veteran actress Iyabo Ojo also recorded a notable milestone with Labake Olododo. Directed by Biodun Stephen, the 2025 historical drama reportedly grossed more than ₦200 million during its cinema run.

Wunmi Toriola also made an impressive entry into big-screen production with Queen Lateefah. The film opened with ₦56.6 million in its first three days before recording a total of ₦365.4 million.

Nigeria’s Highest-Grossing Films

The current all-time box office chart is dominated by recent productions, reflecting the expansion of cinema audiences and the commercial potential of local films.

Behind The Scenes leads with ₦2.76 billion, followed by Everybody Loves Jenifa at ₦1.88 billion and A Tribe Called Judah at ₦1.4 billion.
