Le malattie croniche (o malattie non trasmissibili) affliggono circa 24 milioni di persone in Italia. Queste condizioni hanno un impatto importante sulla qualità e sull'attesa di vita della popolazione. Tali malattie interessano tutte le fasi della vita, anche se i segmenti di popolazione più frequentemente colpiti sono gli anziani (soffre di malattie croniche oltre l’85% degli ultra 75enni) e le donne, in particolare dopo i 55 anni.
È importante quindi migliorare le conoscenze sui meccanismi e sui fattori di rischio che portano allo sviluppo di malattie croniche, così come sulle possibili strategie e programmi per la prevenzione e trattamento di queste condizioni al fine di garantire un invecchiamento in salute della popolazione.
In quest’area, le attività dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) si sviluppano su diversi fronti: dallo studio dei fattori di rischio per le malattie croniche tramite indagini sulla popolazione generale, in età dello sviluppo, adulta e anziana, all'identificazione di nuovi biomarcatori per la diagnosi precoce e il trattamento. Dallo studio dell’efficacia e sicurezza di nuove tecnologie biomediche per il trattamento delle malattie cardiovascolari, allo studio e monitoraggio delle malattie autoimmuni e delle malattie endocrino-metaboliche, quali diabete mellito, malattie tiroidee e deficit dell’ormone della crescita.
L’ISS inoltre, è impegnato su strategie e modelli di assistenza per la persona con malattie croniche e sullo studio dei processi che portano all'invecchiamento in salute, con particolare attenzione agli aspetti epidemiologici e alla valutazione, recupero e mantenimento della funzione motoria, fisica e sensoriale dell’anziano. Infine, uno spazio di lavoro è dedicato anche all'educazione alla salute (Health Literacy), e alla creazione di un sistema per la condivisione e standardizzazione di indicatori dello stato di salute della popolazione europea e in aree a rischio.
