BTEC CONSTRUCTION LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE
Semester 1
Construction Technology: CONS200 This course will examine the different forms of construction that can be used for low-rise (up to 5.2 metres in height) offices, retail units and homes. Learners will acquire an understanding of the performance and construction of low-rise structures both above and below ground.
Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction: CONS201 In this unit you will understand the importance of ensuring good standards of health and safety and will become familiar with the main parts of the health and safety management system. Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of health, safety and welfare in the construction industry and will be given an opportunity to perform and use risk assessments.
Performing Plumbing Operations: CONS202 This unit will give you the opportunity to explore the different tools and equipment used for plumbing operations and to learn how they are used to cut and bend pipework and fasten fittings together. The safe use of tools and equipment is essential as plumbing often takes place within tight and enclosed spaces. Learners will gain knowledge of the working techniques used to perform plumbing operations and will familiarise themselves with the relevant tools and equipment. They will apply techniques to develop practical skills in undertaking plumbing tasks.
Performing Electrical Operations: CONS203 This unit will give learners the basic skills needed to carry out the safe installation of electrical circuits for power and lighting using current industry-standard techniques. In this unit you will investigate some of the activities that are completed during electrical installations. You will also look at health and safety related to working with electricity.
Communication for Tertiary Purposes – GED 102 This foundational communication course is designed to introduce students to the communication process, channel and associated theories. It enables them to interpret and analyse verbal and non-verbal cues to critically evaluate various forms of communication in personal, professional, and societal contexts. In addition, it will help students improve their critical thinking and academic writing skills necessary for becoming effective communicators in business organisations.
College Readiness GED 101 This course introduces students to basics of tertiary education in preparation for their transition from secondary school to an institution of higher learning. They are expected to complete various modules in time management, critical listening, group working and academic writing.
Semester 2
Construction Drawing Techniques: CONS204 Add a Tooltip Text
Exploring Carpentry and Joinery: CONS205 Learners will understand the use of tools, materials and equipment used in carpentry and joinery and will develop skills in preparing, cutting and joining wood. This unit will introduce you to the tools, materials and personal protective equipment (PPE) used by carpenters and joiners. You will learn about the potential health and safety hazards in a carpentry and joinery work area, how to carry out a risk assessment, and what is safe working practice in the use of common tools and equipment. You will also develop the knowledge, skills and techniques to determine and select appropriate materials to produce a timber frame to a given specification.
Performing Blockwork Operations: CONS206 Learners will understand safe working practice when developing skills in the use of tools, materials and equipment to safely complete demanding blockwork tasks. In this unit you will build on the skills and knowledge gained from Unit 11: Exploring Trowel Operations and learn more about building walls using blocks. This unit will offer you the opportunity to explore some of the health and safety practices that apply to blockwork activities, and to explore the common bonding arrangements for raising corners and junctions using concrete blocks, including the processes and techniques used in their construction. You will also have the opportunity to use simple calculations to establish the correct dimensions of walling when setting out masonry structures.
Caribbean Studies GED202 This course offers an interdisciplinary study of the Caribbean region, with a particular focus on its rich history, diverse cultures, and complex social realities. It aims to explore the unique challenges faced by the region's people, including political, economic, social, and environmental issues. By delving into the many facets of the Caribbean, this course aims to showcase the region's incredible diversity and passion.
Semester 3
Unit 4: Construction and Design CONS207 Learners will understand the underlying principles of building design to produce initial designs that meet the needs of a client. On completing this unit, you will understand what the construction industry undertakes in terms of the different types of buildings and structures it designs and builds. You will learn how client briefs can be developed by analysing the client’s needs and requirements for the building and considering the external constraints on development. What makes us Anguillan GED105 This course will provide learners with knowledge about the unique qualities of Anguilla’s history, culture, governance, tourist attractions and leisure spots.
