Germany has pledged €500,000 to help feed refugees in Burundi, as Berlin reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s development and addressing the humanitarian needs of people displaced by conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The announcement was made by Serap Güler, Germany’s deputy foreign minister, during a visit to Burundi on Thursday, October 22. Güler met with Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye and Foreign Affairs Minister Édouard Bizimana for discussions on regional security, the refugee crisis and development cooperation.

During her meeting with Ndayishimiye, Güler discussed the security situation in Africa and the wider Great Lakes region, including the presence of Congolese refugees in Burundi.

The Burundian president called on Germany to support several development priorities, including the rehabilitation of the cultural centre in Gitega, youth entrepreneurship, access to clean water and the mining sector.

Güler acknowledged Burundi’s exposure to the consequences of the conflict in eastern DRC and called for efforts to restore peace through dialogue.

Germany’s €500,000 pledge is intended to support food assistance for refugees. Güler also said Germany would continue working with Burundi on development initiatives.

As part of her visit, the German official travelled to the Cishemere refugee camp, where she observed the living conditions of Congolese refugees.

Güler also announced plans for Germany to work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to facilitate the voluntary return of refugees who wish to go home and for whom a return is feasible.

The pledge comes as Burundi continues to host people fleeing conflict in eastern DRC, placing additional demands on humanitarian assistance and essential services. The proposed cooperation with UNHCR aims to support refugees who choose to return when conditions allow.
